The Red Cedar Fly Fishers were well represented at the Great Lakes Council’s West Michigan Fly Show on the weekend of January 13 and 14. Many Red Cedars helped set up the show, staff various Council booths, sell fund raising raffle tickets as well as run the club booth. Thanks to all the Red Cedar Fly Fishers who attended and helped out.
Our January meeting will be on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 in room 273 of Giltner Hall on the MSU campus. The meeting will start with coffee and a social time at 6:30 p.m. followed by a presentation by Andrew Carlson, our scholarship winner from last year. Andrew will report on his research project from last summer. Please join us and don’t forget the West Michigan Fly Show on January 13 & 14, 2018 in the East Kentwood High School in Grand Rapids. The Fly Show is sponsored by the Great Lakes Council of the Fly Fishers International.
Our first club tying night is scheduled for Sunday, December 3 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in room 273 of Giltner Hall on the MSU campus. This is an informal session for members, guests and visitors to meet and tie flies. Please join us to tie or just watch and questions other tiers.
The next regular meeting of the Red Cedar Fly Fishers will be on Tuesday, November 14 in room 273 in Giltner Hall on the MSU campus. As usual, we start with coffee and socializing at 6:30 p.m. followed by a short business meeting. Following the business meeting, we will have a presentation by Dr. Jo Latimore of MSU’s department of fisheries and wildlife. Dr. Latimore will be speaking about aquatic invasive species, a topic of growing concern here in Michigan. Our meetings are open to you, especially if you are interested in fly fishing and Michigan’s aquatic environment. Please join us,
Our October meeting will be on Tuesday, October 10 in room 273 of Gilner Hall on the MSU campus. Socializing will begin at 6:30 p.m. followed by a short business meeting and program. The program will be Tip and Tricks for better outdoor photograph presented by member Mark Noel. Please join us for an evening of friendship and fun.

This year’s AuSable River clean up, sponsored by the Anglers of the AuSable will be held on Saturday, September 9 from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Volunteers clean assigned stretches of the AuSable system then gather around noon and are treated to a great barbecue lunch on the casting field at Gates Lodge. The Red Cedar Fly Fishers are proud to be volunteers for this event that helps keep the river clean. Anyone wishing to help out this year contact Josh at Josh@GatesLodge.com. Hope to see you there.

The meeting will start with a social/coffee time at 6:30 followed by a short business meeting and will conclude with a program relating to Michigan habitat or fly fishing. Details about the program will be posted as soon as possible. You do not have to be a member to attend our meetings. Please join us and see what we are all about. Members, please remember that dues of $10.00 are due at this meeting. We would like to see all members be paid up by the October meeting.
The annual Au Sable River clean up is scheduled for Saturday, September 9. The clean up starts at 9:00 a.m. and concludes with a legendary picnic under the tent at Gates Lodge. If your organization or you individually would like to participate, send Josh Greenberg an email at email@example.com. We are proud to say that the Red Cedar Fly Fishers have been involved in this great event since it’s inception about 20 years ago. We have been assigned to stretch from Burton’s to Louie’s Landing, the beginning of the Holy Waters and a beautiful, wadeable stretch of river.
The Red Cedar Fly Fishers would like to welcome Steve A. to the board of directors. Steve was elected to the position of secretary and we are sure he will bring energy and a new perspective to our meetings. The board met over the weekend of August 11 – 13 to begin planning for our upcoming year. The meeting was the centerpiece of a weekend of fishing and federating in the Grayling/Au Sable River area. Members please check your September newsletter (due out the first week of September) for information from that meeting.
