The presentation for this month is titled “The Basics of Stream Ecology: The First Step in Becoming a Better Angler.” It will be presented by Frank Dillon, who joined our club just a few short months ago.

Frank’s presentation will provide a basic introduction to the ecology of freshwater streams. It will cover basic stream hydrology, energy cycling, and stream invertebrate ecology, with emphasis on important stream insects. The main goal of the presentation is to enhance catch rate success by providing anglers with a better understanding of the structure and function of a stream ecosystem and a better ability to read water conditions.

Frank has a Master of Science degree in Biology, and he has been working in the field of aquatic biology and aquatic toxicology for 28 years. He began his career as a research scientist studying aspects of the ecology of large rivers. Frank is currently Principal Technologist in the Environmental Services Business Group of CH2M-Hill, and he currently researches the effects of chemicals on the ecology of aquatic environments.

Since trout season is just getting underway, there couldn’t be a better time for this highly-informative presentation!

Social from 6:30pm, business at 7:00pm. Visitors always welcome.

Our April Presentation will be a fly tying demonstration by RCFF member and Nomad Anglers fly shop owner Brian Bielecki. Brian will be providing step-by-step instructions for tying various early-season dry fly patterns for many of Michigan’s rivers, particularly the Au Sable and Manistee.

Having Brian demonstrate the tying of early-season patterns at our April meeting is starting to become a tradition of the RCFF. He has put on some very informative sessions for us over the past few years. Not only will Brian be demonstrating the tying of flies for the early hatches, he will also be willing to answer any questions that you may have regarding different tying techniques or the tying of other types of patterns.

After watching Brian’s presentation, you will be able to put what you learned into action by trying to duplicate some of his patterns at our upcoming final fly tying session. Fill those empty slots in your fly boxes and get ready for the 2012 season!

Social from 6:30pm, business at 7:00pm. Visitors always welcome.

The presentation this month will be performed by Mark Johnston, DDS. Mark’s presentation will focus on an 11-day fishing adventure that he and a fishing buddy took this past fall to various parts of Alaska. Their trip centered around the Naknek River Camp, which is owned and operated by Jim Johnson of Baldwin, Michigan. Mark and his friend also took a two-day side trip to the Kenai Peninsula, where they fished the Kenai and Russian Rivers, as well as Grayling Lake.

Mark will not only cover his fishing adventures, but he will also include discussion regarding the costs and preparation involved with organizing a trip of this magnitude. This will be excellent information for anyone who may be contemplating experiencing Alaska for themselves at some point in the future.

The Annual Au Sable clean up was held on September 13 and nine RCFF members made the trek to wade our assigned “beat”.

This year we walked the Thendara Road to Guide’s Rest section of the main branch, a distance of around a mile. There was quite a bit of trash to pick up this year, mainly beer cans.

The Anglers of the Au Sable provided a big tent this year in case of rain. Since the weather was great it served instead to provide some welcome shelter from the sun.
Along with the great BBQ lunch they also arranged an excellent blues guitarist for entertainment. Thanks Anglers and Gates Lodge for a great event!

Most of the RCFF folk fished the river from Guide’s rest down to Gates Lodge after a nap in the afternoon. While we saw fish rising early in the evening very little was caught. It was however a beautiful night for a walk down the river.

Looking forward to the cleanup in 2012.
